The coalition, called “Citizens for Good Public Policy,” aims to enact a Charter Amendment that would oppose the addition of such categories to the city’s civil rights ordinance.

BRIGHTON -- At least 200 people gathered on Wednesday night to mourn an 18-year-old transgender person who was apparently beaten to death last week.
Justin Zapata, who went by the name Angie Zapata and was living as a woman, was found dead in a Greeley apartment in the 2000 block of 4th Street on July 17.
She had fatal wounds to her head and face.
Greeley Police say they don't have the evidence to definitively call Zapata's murder a hate crime, but they are not ruling it out.
Her family and friends remain convinced that was the reason she was killed.
"Why would anybody, you would dare do something like that? Why?" said Alicia Portillo, one of Zapata's friends.
Zapata's funeral service was held Wednesday night in Brighton.
Police believe they are getting close to a suspect.

Aug. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Paiboon Marvin started wearing dresses and makeup before he became a teenager. Now 16, he wants to be castrated as the next step toward becoming a woman.
Until recently, that wouldn't have been a problem: Boys of any age in Thailand could have their testicles removed for as little as 5,000 Baht ($150) with no questions asked. Now Paiboon may have to wait two years because the procedure will be outlawed for those under 18, after pressure from gay rights activists who say youngsters may follow a trend and regret it later.
``I don't think I'm too young to do it,'' says Paiboon, wearing a green-ribboned top, shorts, mascara and pink lipstick. ``I know I won't change my mind. I've known since I was a kid that I'm not male.''
The business school student has support from doctors who perform more than 1,000 castrations and sex-change operations annually in the Buddhist kingdom, which has one of the world's largest transsexual communities. A Thai school has created toilets for its transgender students with a sign that's half male, half female.
The Kamphaeng School in Si Sa Ket, in northeastern Thailand opened separate toilet facilities to accommodate hundreds of transgender students who have always longed for their own restroom.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - A global AIDS conference that opens in Mexico City on Sunday is meant for people infected with HIV, but transsexual sex worker Elma Delea cannot get inside.
She will be protesting on the fringes of the six-day biennial event.
"They (Mexican health authorities) said they had no money for everyone who wanted scholarships. We are very angry," said Elma Delea, as she stood at the junction of Calle de Alfredo Chavero and Calzada San Antonio Abad, a stretch of road where transsexuals wait all night to be picked up by customers in passing cars.
Her friends nodded, citing other explanations given by organizers, such as not being able to speak English.
Some 25,000 people are expected at the event, which draws scientists, international agencies, government officials, non-government organizations and the media.
But people most at risk of the disease, such as sex workers, homosexuals and intravenous drug users, are least visible. Most are poor and cannot afford registration fees. . . .Read More

IN the 1936 Olympic Games, the sprinter Stella Walsh — running for Poland and known as the fastest woman in the world — was beaten by Helen Stephens of St. Louis, who set a world record by running 100 meters in 11.4 seconds. After the race, a Polish journalist protested that Stephens must be a man. After all, no woman in the world could run that fast.
Olympic officials performed a “sex test” on Stephens, who was found, in fact, to be female, proving once and for all that a person could be incredibly fast and female at the same time.
Forty-four years later, Walsh, who had become an American citizen, was shot to death in the parking lot of a discount store in Cleveland. This is a sad story. Being gay, I've known some transsexuals. I'm not sexually attracted to them, but some are by nature very feminine. But no matter how female they feel themselves to be, these stories must remind them that if they have male junk between their legs, or used to have male junk, it really is fair and safe to let men know. There is no excuse for hitting anyone else for any reason save self defense. But many men apparently just can't handle it for whatever reason. And therefore it is too dangerous, and really not ethical to deceive others.In my 50 years, the first 30 living closeted in the church world, I have heard a lot of "sinful desires". There are "straight" men who have said that they really wish they had a beautiful, feminine, woman as their spouse/girl, but when alone and intimate, these men would love to find male equipment. So there are men who like "chix with dix". I tell them, "They are out there looking for love too, go find them." Same advice to transsexuals, there are men who would absolutely be thrilled with what you have to offer. With the internet, you can find accepting prospects. Please be safe. Being a transsexual and those attracted to transsexuals puts you in a closet, and living in the closet SUCKS. Avoid Jerry Springer moments or worse.

Arnow, 42 and a resident of Montgomery County in Maryland, was born male. But on her birthday five years ago, she said, she realized she didn't fit in her own skin, and she began transitioning that day. Now living as a woman, she wears make-up and dresses, paints her toenails and worries about how her long hair looks.
She also struggles to pay her bills, because she can't find a job. She said she was fired by the country club where she cooked when her bosses found out she was switching her gender, and now no one will hire her. "Everyone is worried what the other employees will think," she said. "It's just sad."
The lawmakers of Montgomery County, a wealthy and generally liberal enclave outside Washington, D.C., responded to such stories by enacting a measure earlier this year that forbids discrimination based on gender identity. Thirteen states and about 90 municipalities have similar protections, including Illinois, which passed its law in 2005. Chicago has had a similar policy in place since 2002. . . .Read More

Canada treated people with unusual physical attributes — paradoxically — as a cause for fear and as crowd-pleasing attractions. Nowhere was that contradictory attitude more apparent than in the carnival.
Jan-Rok Arcand is a Montreal carnival historian. He talks about the exhibition of human curiosities as "a sort of exoticism." But the moral questions are tough for him to answer.
"Was this just exhibitionism, or was it in a way sensitizing people?" says Arcand.
